Is Florida Really the ‘Pickleball Capital of the World?’ What About Sarasota?

Sarasota Luxury Living Meets America’s Fastest-Growing Sport: Pickleball 🏓
During my evening bike rides, I often pass by the Pompano Trailhead pickleball courts. They are always bustling with activity. Players rotate in and out, paddles tucked under their arms. Their lively conversations carry easily between games while they wait for their turn. I find myself enjoying the distinctive ‘plink-plonk’ sound of the ball meeting the paddle, over and over. It literally sounds like fun.
Across Sarasota and the Gulf Coast, pickleball has become part of our daily rhythm. This is especially true in some of the area’s most desirable residential neighborhoods, including downtown Sarasota, Lakewood Ranch, Venice, and Longboat Key.
While pickleball may be the fastest-growing sport in the country, here it feels like something more enduring. It’s a part of our culture that shows how people truly enjoy and live life to the fullest in Florida.

Why Pickleball Works So Well Here
Pickleball’s appeal is often explained in simple terms—it’s easy to learn, social, and accessible across age groups. In Sarasota, these qualities align perfectly with the weather and the active lifestyle that many residents sought when moving here.
This community values daily movement and casual social interaction. Outdoor activities don’t require advance planning. Pickleball fits seamlessly into our Sarasota lifestyle. It’s competitive enough to be engaging, relaxed enough to feel welcoming, and social by design.
In coastal towns like Longboat Key and master-planned communities like Lakewood Ranch, where active living is woven into the culture, pickleball has become another way residents stay connected. It connects them to their health, their neighbors, and the outdoor lifestyle that initially drew many here.
From Public Courts to Private Amenities
As public courts grow busier, residential communities and luxury developments are responding. For buyers evaluating luxury properties in Sarasota, recreational amenities have always been important. However, what’s shifted is the definition of “complete.” A decade ago, a pool and fitness center checked the boxes. Today, discerning buyers expect pickleball, too.
We’re witnessing this shift in real time. The new Bath + Racquet Residences & Club development in south Sarasota has embraced racquet sports with tennis and pickleball as its focus. The Club’s spectacular facilities feature outdoor tennis and padel courts, along with air-conditioned indoor tennis, pickleball, and padel courts.
In Sarasota’s evolving Quay district, a pickleball amenity will be offered inside the new Harbor Club at the Ritz-Carlton Residences, Sarasota Bay. This brings a true resort-style experience into the heart of the city. This notable shift in pickleball as a luxury amenity reflects something deeper than sports trends. It’s about recognizing how residents want to spend their time: actively, socially, and without leaving their community.
Where Tennis Still Fits In
While pickleball commands the current spotlight, tennis remains deeply woven into Sarasota’s recreational identity—particularly among established residents and serious players.
Payne Park’s tennis complex continues to draw a dedicated and affluent following. Visit on any weekday, and you’ll find the courts filled with skilled players running through drills or new players taking lessons.

The distinction matters. Tennis requires years to master; pickleball can be learned in an afternoon. Tennis demands peak physical conditioning well into middle age; pickleball accommodates a wider range of fitness levels. Neither is “better”—they simply serve different populations and skill levels.
What’s telling about Sarasota is that both thrive here. The community has room for pickleball’s accessible energy and tennis’s technical legacy. That’s not a contradiction but evidence of depth and sophistication. Sarasota isn’t abandoning established amenities to chase the latest trend; it’s thoughtfully layering new opportunities onto an already-rich recreational foundation.
The Bigger Picture
It’s easy to think about square footage, finishes, or price per foot when evaluating luxury properties. But for buyers considering Sarasota’s most sought-after neighborhoods—whether downtown, on the coast, or in our popular master-planned communities—lifestyle details should carry equal weight.
Can you walk to dinner without getting in the car? Are there places to gather naturally with neighbors? Can you maintain an active routine without elaborate planning or gym schedules? These questions matter, particularly to buyers relocating from larger cities like New York or Chicago.
When I show properties to clients, the formal tour is only part of the conversation. We talk about where they’ll have their morning coffee, whether they can bike to the farmers market, and which neighborhoods have the kind of casual social fabric they’re seeking. For some buyers, knowing there are active pickleball or tennis courts nearby becomes a meaningful data point—not because they’re necessarily avid players, but because these amenities often signal an active, engaged community they want to be part of.

This is what I mean when I talk about evaluating Sarasota through the lens of lifestyle rather than just location. Of course, the property itself matters. But it’s the life you’ll actually live there—the daily rhythms, the social connections, the ease of staying active and engaged—that transforms a beautiful residence into a true home.
Exploring Luxury Real Estate in Sarasota
If you’re exploring Sarasota with these priorities in mind, I regularly share insights into how different neighborhoods support the way people actually want to live. Elements like walkability, recreational amenities, and everyday social energy are often the subtle qualities that make a community feel welcoming rather than merely luxurious.
If I can be a resource as you explore Sarasota, I’d be happy to help.
